Field Trip

The field trip on Tuesday 4th January will visit sites in Combe Martin and Fremington, North Devon.

Led by: Andy Mort, Richard Scrivener, Peter Ward and Chris Cornford

10:00   Meet at the car park directly above Combe Martin beach (SS576473)

We will visit the foreshore at Combe Martin to observe the Variscan fold structures of the Combe Martin and Wild Pear slates (± limestones), from fish-hook folds of the thin limestones to the larger folds affecting the entire section. The striking tectonics of the area has had historically provided the economy of Combe Martin with galena and other minerals which formed the basis of the Medieval silver mining industry in the area.

We will be visiting the historic silver mines, hosted by the Combe Martin Miners Association followed by lunch at the Dolphin Inn.

13:00   Lunch at the Dolphin Inn, Seaside, Combe Martin, Devon, EX34 0AW (Tel: 01271 883424)

14:30   Meet at Fremington Quay, Fremington, Barnstaple, Devon, EX31 2NH (SS516333)

An easy walk to the foreshore shows low cliffs of steeply dipping Bideford-Crackington Formation Carboniferous, the upper surface of which is heavily weathered and shows evidence of glacial distortion and soil slip.  The often, thinly bedded rocks show sedimentary features of deep basinal conditions and are steeply inclined to overturned, and locally folded and faulted.  The weathering profile produces a diversity of alteration products which can be used as pigments.

Please contact Andy Mort or Chris Cornford on 01237 471749 or 0777 378 8243 if unable to attend on the day

Hard hats will be provided.
