The Ussher Society
Geoscience in South-West England
50th Annual Conference
Exmouth, Devon, 3rd – 5th January 2012

First Circular and call for papers

The Ussher Society is pleased to announce that its 50th Annual Conference will be held at the Royal Beacon Hotel, Exmouth, Devon on 3rd-5th January 2012. There will be two days of presentations followed by one day of field excursions.

CONFERENCE PROGRAMME
The 50th Conference marks a significant milestone for the Society and we do hope that you will be able to participate. The conference is likely to be very well attended and we recommend early registration and booking of accommodation to avoid disappointment (we have a limit of 110 delegates for the presentations). Whilst many members traditionally wait for the Second Circular before making a commitment, it would be advisable to book early on this occasion. We would appreciate, where possible, return of the Conference Booking Form and payment by Friday 7th October. Note that as the Conference falls very close to the New Year, travelling for many will be necessary on Monday 2nd January which is a Bank Holiday.

Our intention is to run eight sessions that span the major research themes of the last 50 years (see over); most sessions will include a slightly longer keynote address summarising the advances in knowledge in that area. We are actively seeking contributions to the programme – so if you are able to present a talk or poster, please provide details on the enclosed form by Friday 7th October using the form provided. A bursary fund is available to contribute to the cost of full-time students wishing to attend the meeting to present a paper (contact Robin Shail for details). All presenting authors have the opportunity, and are encouraged, to submit their paper for publication, subject to peer review, in the Society’s journal “Geoscience in South-West England”.

Monday 2nd January – Registration and Reception

Registration will be available 1700-2000 with an ‘icebreaker’ reception from 1900.

Tuesday 3rd January - Presentations

Verbal and poster presentations.

The Scott Simpson Lecture on the geological evolution of the Wessex Basin will be presented by Professor John Underhill of the University of Edinburgh (to be confirmed).

The Annual General Meeting will be held at the end of the afternoon session.

The Conference Dinner will be held in Donato’s Restaurant at the Royal Beacon Hotel.

Wednesday 4th January - Presentations

Verbal and poster presentations.

Thursday 5th January – Field excursions

Great company, scenery and geology – a perfect start to the New Year. Please see below for brief details and indicate your area(s) of interest on the Conference Booking Form; we will provide full details in the Second Circular.
